Sailing offers a unique opportunity to connect with nature, but it’s essential to minimise our impact on the environment while enjoying the open seas. Whether you’re an experienced sailor or setting sail for the first time, here are some key ways to make your trip more eco-friendly and help protect marine ecosystems.

Bring a bin bag and dispose of waste responsibly

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to keep our oceans clean is to bring a bin bag onboard. This ensures all waste is collected and disposed of properly at the appropriate facilities on land, preventing litter from polluting the water.

Even small pieces of rubbish can have devastating effects on marine life. Always store litter on board until you can dispose of it properly on land. Consider going one step further by participating in or organising beach and ocean clean-ups.

Reduce plastic usage

Plastic pollution is a major threat to the ocean. Reduce plastic usage by bringing reusable water bottles, containers and shopping bags to cut down on single-use plastics. Opt for biodegradable or reusable alternatives whenever possible.

Be mindful of fuel usage

Fuel emissions from boats contribute to pollution, harming marine life and ecosystems. Reduce your carbon footprint by sailing whenever conditions allow, minimising the use of your motor, and ensuring your engine is well-maintained to maximise efficiency.

Minimising motor use not only saves fuel but also reduces noise pollution, which can disturb marine animals such as dolphins and whales.

Use mooring balls instead of anchors

Anchoring can cause serious damage to sensitive seabeds, including coral reefs and seagrass beds, which are vital marine habitats. Whenever available, use mooring balls to secure your boat instead of anchoring.

Follow local maritime guidelines

Different areas have specific regulations to protect marine environments. Before you set sail, read local guides to mariners and respect voluntary no-anchoring zones and other conservation efforts.

Use onshore facilities when available

Where possible, use facilities on land rather than disposing of wastewater at sea. Many marinas have pump-out stations for sewage and waste disposal, reducing pollution in marine habitats.

By adopting these eco-friendly practices, you can enjoy your sailing adventure while preserving the beauty of the ocean for future generations. Small changes can have a big impact, ensuring that our waters remain healthy and vibrant for years to come.
